# Actors

> Browse the Actors library, create AI Twins and custom actors, and manage looks and settings on Captions desktop and iOS.

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Desktop">
    On Captions desktop, **Actors** is where you browse public and private actors and create new ones for prompt-to-video and other avatar projects.

    ## Open the Actors library

    Click **Actors** in the left sidebar to open the **Actors** page. The **Actors library** lists **public actors** (available to everyone) and **private actors** (actors you created, visible only to you).

      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/y2isn1XbFu3rgyaN/src/img/captions-web/actors-1.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=y2isn1XbFu3rgyaN&q=85&s=71e2889170274af1764c5d630ccadfb3" alt="Actors page in the Captions desktop sidebar showing the Actors library" data-path="src/img/captions-web/actors-1.png" />
    </Frame>

    ## Create an actor

    Click **Create actor**. You can start in one of two ways:

    * Upload a **reference image**
    * Write a **prompt** that describes the actor

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/y2isn1XbFu3rgyaN/src/img/captions-web/actors-2.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=y2isn1XbFu3rgyaN&q=85&s=839eaafe4ddda2bd47aea3932af11417" alt="Create actor options for a reference image or a text prompt" data-path="src/img/captions-web/actors-2.png" />
    </Frame>

    ## Create an actor from a reference image

    Use a reference photo that shows:

    * The face clearly
    * The mouth open with teeth visible
    * A mid or close-up shot
    * Only one person in the frame
    * A subject whose gender matches the speaker voice you plan to use

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/y2isn1XbFu3rgyaN/src/img/captions-web/actors-3.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=y2isn1XbFu3rgyaN&q=85&s=23573c43f94d6cd78bc9067fa487cdda" alt="Reference image requirements for creating an actor from a photo" data-path="src/img/captions-web/actors-3.png" />
    </Frame>

    After you upload the image, you can **zoom in** if you want the framing closer to the actor's face.

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ/src/img/captions-web/actors-4.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ&q=85&s=0bf9cea7b3403632f5481fc9efd1e6fd" alt="Zooming in on a reference image before actor generation" data-path="src/img/captions-web/actors-4.png" />
    </Frame>

    By uploading an image, you confirm that you have the rights, consents, and licenses needed to use it.

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ/src/img/captions-web/actors-5.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ&q=85&s=67dd5ee7a11980c2444e5c03ad4dc54a" alt="Confirming rights before Captions generates actor sample looks" data-path="src/img/captions-web/actors-5.png" />
    </Frame>

    Captions then generates a few **sample looks** for the actor.

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ/src/img/captions-web/actors-6.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ&q=85&s=15d3421257f57f2c91d075444ccefd07" alt="Sample looks generated for an actor from a reference image" data-path="src/img/captions-web/actors-6.png" />
    </Frame>

    To try another variation, click **New look**. In the prompt field, describe the changes you want. You can also upload images of objects or other references to guide the new look. Creating new looks uses credits.

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ/src/img/captions-web/actors-7.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ&q=85&s=11402730b955c4571b479483933c4e3e" alt="New look prompt and reference uploads for an actor" data-path="src/img/captions-web/actors-7.png" />
    </Frame>

    When you have the look you want, save it to your **Actors library**.

      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ/src/img/captions-web/actors-8.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ&q=85&s=53e7687798efc5172573224803418514" alt="Saving an actor look to the Actors library" data-path="src/img/captions-web/actors-8.png" />
    </Frame>

    To review actors you generated earlier, click **History**.

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ/src/img/captions-web/actors-9.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ&q=85&s=26e55d25f2182cd90721d8b6fd274fcb" alt="History of previously generated actors" data-path="src/img/captions-web/actors-9.png" />
    </Frame>

    ## Create an actor from a prompt

    Click **Create actor**, then choose **Describe your actor**.

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ/src/img/captions-web/actors-prompt-1.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ&q=85&s=141e41a9608f8d95ab08263e8af7f308" alt="Describe your actor option when creating an actor from a prompt" data-path="src/img/captions-web/actors-prompt-1.png" />
    </Frame>

    Describe the person you want in one flowing scene description. Include appearance details such as gender, age, hair, clothing, and accessories, how they face the camera, and the setting or lighting you want. Match the actor to the voice you plan to use. For a full prompt guide with examples, see the [Mirage prompt guide](/help/mirage/mirage-prompt-guide).

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ/src/img/captions-web/actors-prompt-2.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ&q=85&s=38824da281b7d96b866d3b11459b2860" alt="Actor prompt field with optional random prompt from the dice icon" data-path="src/img/captions-web/actors-prompt-2.png" />
    </Frame>

    Click the **dice** icon if you want Captions to fill in a random actor prompt.

    After you submit the prompt, Captions generates **two** actor options. Pick the one that looks best to create the actor. If neither option works, edit the prompt and generate again.

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ/src/img/captions-web/actors-prompt-3.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=jrSEKx6Wfo918uEJ&q=85&s=cf4b91be8e0b4b12fed886dd415452a9" alt="Choosing one of two generated actors after submitting a prompt" data-path="src/img/captions-web/actors-prompt-3.png" />
    </Frame>
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="iOS">
    ## Open Actors from Home

    On the **Home** screen, open the menu and choose **Avatar**. You will see a few actors in your actor library, including any custom actors you have created.

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/yi_vVm39TzuEllGL/src/img/actors-ios/switching-to-avatar-on-home-screen.jpg?fit=max&auto=format&n=yi_vVm39TzuEllGL&q=85&s=cc98163de2da619c9dcd475b43e263bb" alt="Home screen on iOS with Avatar selected from the dropdown menu" data-path="src/img/actors-ios/switching-to-avatar-on-home-screen.jpg" />
    </Frame>

    ## Browse the Actor library

    Tap **All actors** to open the full **Actor library**. You will find all publicly available actors, plus your own private custom actors. Actors you created on your account are labeled with a **Private** tag.

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/yi_vVm39TzuEllGL/src/img/actors-ios/all-actors-button.jpg?fit=max&auto=format&n=yi_vVm39TzuEllGL&q=85&s=3e8c730866341d82a6b7ecca8b3fe957" alt="All actors button opening the full Actor library on iOS" data-path="src/img/actors-ios/all-actors-button.jpg" />
    </Frame>

    ## Create an AI Twin

    Tap **[Create AI Twin](/help/docs/project/ai-twin)** to create an actor based on your face. You will be asked to take a **selfie**. Keep your whole face visible and stay close enough to the camera that your face is clear in the frame.

    After the selfie, you can record a few short **voice recordings** by reading the scripts on screen. This step is optional and you can skip it, but it helps your actor sound like you.

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/yi_vVm39TzuEllGL/src/img/actors-ios/selfie-and-recording-ai-twin.jpg?fit=max&auto=format&n=yi_vVm39TzuEllGL&q=85&s=48bb0534ed70ffbd9734dee897e9bf7b" alt="Taking a selfie and optional voice recordings when creating an AI Twin on iOS" data-path="src/img/actors-ios/selfie-and-recording-ai-twin.jpg" />
    </Frame>

    If you record voice clips, you can choose which AI model generates your [voice clone](/help/guides/advanced/voice-clone). The **ElevenLabs** model works well in most cases. If you want your original accent preserved as closely as possible, select the **Mirage** model.

    <Frame>
      <img height="300" src="https://mintcdn.com/captions/yi_vVm39TzuEllGL/src/img/actors-ios/changing-ai-twin-voice-model.jpg?fit=max&auto=format&n=yi_vVm39TzuEllGL&q=85&s=9e4cb086e0670d83091a92735bec7b6a" alt="Choosing ElevenLabs or Mirage for AI Twin voice clone generation on iOS" data-path="src/img/actors-ios/changing-ai-twin-voice-model.jpg" />
    </Frame>

    Actor generation can take a few minutes. When it finishes, your new **AI Twin** appears in the Actor library.

    ## Create an actor from a prompt

    From the Actor library, tap **Describe actor**. Describe your actor and their characteristics in the prompt field. You can regenerate if you are not happy with the result. When you like the actor, tap **Save actor** to add them to your library.

    </Frame>

    Tap the **triple-dot** icon to open the actor's settings. You can **rename** the actor or **delete** them from your library.
