# Editing Caption Text and Timing

> Change a caption phrase or a single word, including spelling, color, timing, and emphasis.

After captions are on the timeline, click the phrase or the word you want to change. The inspector opens next to the preview.

## Edit a phrase

Click the caption phrase on the timeline, such as "Hey guys, Jason here."

In the phrase panel you can:

* Rewrite the phrase text.
* Change the caption style for that phrase.
* Move or rotate the phrase.
* Set when the phrase starts and ends.

## Edit a word

Click one word inside the phrase.

In the word panel you can:

* Fix spelling.
* Set the word's start and end.
* Change the word color.
* Apply word effects such as Breaks or Focus.
* Delete the word.

Changing one word does not restyle the rest of the video. To change the look of every caption, use [Captions style](https://captions.ai/help/web/project-settings/captions-style.md) or [customize the template](https://captions.ai/help/web/captions/customizing-a-template.md).

## Fix a bad transcript

If a name or product is wrong throughout the video, ask [AI chat](https://captions.ai/help/web/ai-chat.md) to replace that word, then spot-check the timeline. Chat can update the transcript across the clip. The phrase and word panels are for the lines you want to set by hand.
