# Media

> Import or generate images and video onto the timeline.

**Media** on the tool rail adds pictures and video to the open project.

**1. Open Media**

Select **Media**. The panel is for files and for generation.

**2. Import a file**

Select **Import** and choose an image or video. It is added to the timeline at the playhead.

**3. Generate media**

Choose **Image** or **Video**, write a prompt, and select **Generate media**. Set the media model and the aspect ratio before you generate. The model list stays unavailable until the prompt has text.

Generated media is also kept in **Library**, so you can drop it into another project later.

Chat can add or generate media too. Use **+** in the message field. See [AI chat](https://captions.ai/help/web/ai-chat.md).
