# Text

> Add a text layer and edit its type, layout, color, and animation.

**Text** on the tool rail places a title, lower third, or label on the canvas. Click the preview to drop the text, then edit it in the inspector.

## What you can change

Select the text layer on the timeline or on the canvas.

* **Typography.** Font, weight, and size.
* **Position and layout.** Offset, alignment, rotation, anchor, scale, and text on a path.
* **Color and appearance.** Fill, opacity, and blend mode.
* **Effects and masks.** Treatments on the text, plus a mask or a track matte (alpha or luma, including an inverted matte).
* **Animation.** A text animator changes characters, words, or lines inside the layer. Animator properties are what changes. Selectors decide which characters, words, or lines receive it. Range and wiggle selectors are available for that choice.

Caption phrases are a different layer. Edit those from the caption phrase itself. See [Editing captions](https://captions.ai/help/web/captions/editing-captions.md).
