Your followers receive your messages and can react with emojis or answer polls, but they can’t send messages directly to you through this channel. Instead, they’ll see a one-sided conversation in their DMs.

  • Audience size — To create a broadcast channel, you need a minimum of 10,000 followers. 
  • Profile guidelines — Your profile must comply with Instagram’s community expectations.

How To Start a Broadcast Channel on Instagram: 5 Steps

If you’re ready to create your own broadcast channel, follow these five steps:

  1. Sign in — Log into your Instagram business or creator account. 
  2. Tap the message icon — Click the pencil-shaped icon at the top right corner of your screen.
  3. Select “Create a broadcast channel” — Provide details like your channel’s name, audience, and end date. You can also select whether you want to display it on your profile.
  4. Click “Create” — Head to this button in the top-right of your screen to confirm.
  5. Share your new account — Making the broadcast channel will send a one-time invite to your followers. You can also share a link, post in a Story, or create a QR code. 

Quick tip: To connect with people outside of Instagram, share the link to your broadcast channel in marketing materials. For example, include it in an email, digital poster, or post on other platforms.

Why Am I Not Able To Create a Broadcast Channel on Instagram?

Currently, this feature is only available to a limited number of creators who meet certain requirements. Namely, you need a public business or creator account with at least 10,000 followers to quality. 

Instagram is also rolling out this program slowly, so there’s a chance that you can’t make a broadcast channel even if you hit the criteria. In that case, contact Instagram’s support team for more information.

How Do I Join Channels on Instagram?

If an account you already follow creates a broadcast channel, you’ll get a one-time notification to join. Creators may also post a link or QR code in their Stories. 

Broadcast channels are always public, so you should be able to find them by searching online or on the app. However, they’re not always free — if a channel has turned on subscribers only, you’ll have to pay to access exclusive content.
