Traditional video editing means hours of scrubbing through footage, cutting clips, layering music, and tweaking transitions. With Captions’ AI Edit and Co-editor, the AI handles all of that for you. You just review and refine. This guide walks through a complete edit without touching the timeline once.

How it works

AI Edit analyzes your footage and automatically produces a finished video: captions, B-roll, music, transitions, and motion graphics are all added in one step. If anything needs tweaking, Co-editor lets you describe changes in plain language and the AI applies them. No scrubbing required.

Steps

1

Import or record your footage

On the home screen, tap New Project and either upload a video from your camera roll or record directly using the built-in Camera. For best results, use a single continuous clip rather than multiple shots, as AI Edit is optimized for single-speaker footage.
Vertical (9:16) footage under 2 minutes works best with AI Edit. Landscape or multi-speaker clips are not currently supported.
2

Tap AI Edit

Once your footage is loaded in the editor, tap the AI Edit button. You’ll be prompted to choose a style. There are 95+ options ranging from minimal and clean to bold and energetic.Tap any style to preview it, then tap Generate to start the edit.
3

Review the result

AI Edit produces a finished video with captions, B-roll overlays, background music, transitions, and motion graphics applied automatically. Watch through the preview to check the overall result. You don’t need to approve every individual element. Just note anything you’d like changed.
4

Use Co-editor to make changes

Tap the Co-editor button (the chat icon in the toolbar) to open the chat interface. Type what you want changed in plain language. Examples:
  • “Remove the third shot”
  • “Make the captions bigger”
  • “Change the music to something more upbeat”
  • “Move the captions to the bottom of the screen”
The AI applies each change immediately. You can keep chatting until the video is exactly right.
Be specific in your Co-editor requests. “Change the caption color to yellow” works better than “fix the captions.”
5

Export

When you’re happy with the result, tap Export. Choose your resolution and format, then save to your camera roll or share directly to your platform of choice.

When AI Edit works best

  • Single speaker, talking directly to camera: AI Edit is optimized for this format
  • Vertical footage (9:16): the motion graphics and B-roll placement are designed for vertical
  • Under 2 minutes: longer clips are not currently supported
  • Clean audio: if your audio has background noise, run Denoise first (Audio panel) before generating

Tips

  • If the first AI Edit result isn’t quite right, don’t regenerate from scratch. Use Co-editor to make targeted changes
  • You can still open the timeline to make manual adjustments at any point, even after AI Edit generates
  • Save your favorite AI Edit style. It will be suggested first next time you use the feature
