Recording on your phone and then waiting to transfer files to an editing app breaks your flow and adds friction. Captions has a built-in camera with an optional teleprompter, so you can record and edit in the same session. Your footage goes straight into the editor the moment you finish recording.

Steps

1

Open Camera from the home screen

On the Captions home screen, tap Camera (the camera icon). This opens the in-app recording interface, which uses your device’s front or rear camera and keeps everything inside Captions.
Shoot in a well-lit space facing your light source. Even a window behind your phone makes a noticeable difference in video quality.
2

Enable Teleprompter (optional)

If you have a script, tap the Teleprompter toggle at the top of the camera screen. Paste or type your script into the text field.Adjust the scroll speed using the slider: slower for dense technical content, faster for short punchy scripts. The teleprompter text scrolls automatically once you start recording so you can read naturally while looking at the camera.
3

Record your clip

Tap the red Record button to start. The teleprompter begins scrolling immediately if enabled.Tap Stop when you’re done. You can record multiple takes. Each one is saved as a separate clip and you can choose which to use.
For AI Edit, aim for a single clean take under 2 minutes. If you make a mistake, pause briefly and restart the sentence. It’s easier to trim than to piece together multiple recordings.
4

Tap Done to go straight into the editor

After recording, tap Done. Captions drops you directly into the editor with your footage already loaded. No exporting, no importing, no waiting. From here you can apply AI Edit for a one-tap finish, or edit manually.
5

Apply AI Edit or edit manually

With AI Edit: Tap the AI Edit button, choose a style, and tap Generate. The AI adds captions, music, B-roll, and motion graphics automatically. Requires Max or Scale plan.Manual editing: Tap Add Captions to auto-transcribe, then use the timeline to trim, split, or reorder clips as needed. Add music, B-roll, and overlays from the toolbar.
Even if you plan to use AI Edit, it’s worth watching your footage through once before generating. A quick manual trim of dead air at the start and end improves the AI’s output.
6

Export

Tap Export when your edit is complete. Choose your resolution and save to your camera roll or share directly.

Teleprompter tips

  • Speed: Start slower than you think you need. It’s easier to speed up mid-recording than to reshoot because you rushed
  • Font size: Increase the teleprompter font size so you can read it without squinting, which reduces natural-looking eye movement
  • Memorize the opening: Even with a teleprompter, memorizing your first 1-2 sentences lets you start with direct eye contact and strong energy

Tips

  • Record in vertical (9:16) orientation if you plan to post to TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts
  • Captions auto-saves your recording. If the app closes unexpectedly, your footage is still there when you reopen
  • You can go back to the Camera to record additional clips and add them to the same project
